20 data points evaluated per bike

The ProForm X-Bike is a bare-bones exercise bike designed to save floor space and money. It positions you upright like a traditional stationary bike, and the unique frame can fold easily for storage. Online this ProForm sells for just $199 at full price including delivery.

To support different workout intensities the ProForm X-Bike has a resistance dial. The dial is placed for convenient adjustments throughout your workout session; you can warm up with an easy-spinning wheel and then increase the tension if desired.

An LCD gives the following feedback as you ride: calorie burn, speed, distance, and time elapsed. Also, a ledge sized for a tablet computer is attached near the handlebars. Add your smartphone or tablet computer, and you can conveniently multitask or catch up on your favorite shows while working on personal fitness.

The Great

  • Low Price: Full price is $199, and that’s very inexpensive for a fitness machine. Most upright models in our exercise bike reviews cost $500 and up.
  • iFit: Built to work with the iFit program, users can enjoy automatic trainer control and allows either the routine or live professionals to adjust the resistance. This program also features Google Earth workouts and a virtual library containing thousands of programs.
  • Small Footprint: The X-Bike doesn’t need much room. When it’s unfolded for riding, the footprint is just 31” long and 16” wide. For comparison most upright home exercise bikes are about four feet long and two feet wide.
  • Foldable Frame: Looking at the X-Bike, you can see it’s named for the X-shaped frame. After exercise you can make the bike compact, basically pushing the wide X into a taller, narrower shape.
  • Transport Wheels: Small wheels are attached for rolling the bike into a closet or other storage area
  • Workout Data: A battery-powered monitor can help you tackle goals by tracking time, distance, speed, and calories. You can also use the bike without turning on the data screen.
  • Computer Ledge: An attached shelf makes it convenient to use your smartphone or tablet computer during exercise.
  • Adjustable Resistance: Adjusting the workout challenge is simple with the turn of a dial. Settings marked from 1 to 8 let you find the right intensity anytime.
  • Adjustable Seat Height: With a removable pin you can adjust the seat height.
  • Padded Seating: The seat is padded for comfort. It isn’t especially plush, but it’s comfortable enough to keep you riding.
  • Pedal Straps: Shoe straps on the pedals give security as you train.

The Not-So-Great

  • Low Weight Capacity: Officially the X-Bike can safely support up to 250 pounds. Judging from user reviews, it’s best to expect a 200-pound limit; otherwise the bike might seem unsteady. For comparison most home exercise bikes have 350-pound user weight capacities.
  • No Heart Rate Monitor: The basic X-Bike lacks a heart rate monitor. IN contrast the X-Bike Duo can display your pulse.
  • No Workout Programs: The X-Bike shows your session statistics but it doesn’t provide workout guidance. In contrast most ProForm exercise bikes are enabled or ready for iFit Coach personal training. For another $100 you can get iFit’s virtual outdoor training with Google Maps on a similar ProForm, the X-Bike Duo.
  • Less Adjustable: Seat height here is vertically adjustable, but unlike with most exercise bikes, you can’t move the seat forward or backward. In customer reviews people on the taller end of the spectrum write that their knees hit the handlebars. This bike also has low adjustability in terms of resistance. You have eight choices, whereas pricier bikes with presets tend to offer 20 resistance levels.
  • Maintenance Required: To keep this bike operating quietly, you’ll probably need to re-tighten the bolts frequently.
  • Short Warranty: The ProForm X-Bike has a very short warranty of just 90 days for parts and labor. For comparison most home exercise bikes are protected for at least one year.

Who Should Use The ProForm X-Bike?

The ProForm X-Bike can support everything from light to intense exercise. At low resistance levels it can help you maintain flexibility and get energized, and with greater tension it brings more calorie burn and cardiovascular training.

This compact exercise bike has a user weight limit of 250 pounds. It best suits people who weigh 200 pounds or less and don’t have very long legs.

The Bottom Line

The ProForm X-Bike is an obvious choice for shoppers aiming to spend less than $200 on a home exercise bike. After all, it’s just about the only option! This trainer isn’t guaranteed to last for long, but if you don’t receive a lemon you could be very pleased with the purchase. For an extra $100 though the ProForm X-Bike Duo provides much more, including iFit readiness and 14 resistance levels instead of only eight.
