Looking for a high-quality indoor cycle with a very realistic road-bike feel? Check out Sole‘s latest addition to their indoor cycle roster: the Johnny G bike. From the father of Spinning—Johnny Goldberg, better known as Johnny G—the Johnny G indoor bike is a high-end Spin bike designed for home use. It allows you to bring the excitement and high-intensity workout of a Spin class to your living room. Heavy-duty components such as a triple powder-coated solid steel frame and a hefty 46-pound flywheel will help you hold steady even during your toughest routines. Advanced workout data and seamless Bluetooth and ANT+™-enabled electronics will allow you to stay on top of your progress. Attach your own wireless chest strap, and tune into Myzone™, Garmin® and leaderboards to bring the Spin class experience home. The only thing we aren’t so keen on? The price. The bike costs just under $3K, so it will probably only appeal to advanced cyclists who want to up their at-home Spin game. Check out the pros and cons of the Johnny G bike below, as well as who we think would benefit from investing in this elite machine.

The Great

  • Sturdy: You won’t need to worry about wobbling around during workouts on this bike. It has a triple powder-coated solid steel frame (plated, powder-coated and clear coat) which is built to last.
  • Adjustable: Customize your comfort with the adjustable seat and handlebars.
  • Heavy Flywheel: The heavy duty 46-pound flywheel will challenge even the most advanced trainees. It allows for a smooth, road-bike feel.
  • Resistance: The 20 levels of electronically-controlled magnetic resistance are smooth and quiet. You won’t disturb the rest of your household with this cycle. You can adjust the resistance with the quick controls on the handlebars.
  • Modern Look: The Johnny G bike has a unique, sleek look which will complement your home gym.
  • Versatile Pedals: The dual-sided pedals are SPD compatible and have straps, allowing you to use them with regular shoes or with clip-in cycling shoes.
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth and ANT+™ enabled electronics mean you can connect your own chest strap for heart-rate tracking. You can also connect to Myzone™, Garmin® and leaderboards.
  • Workout Data: The LED screen displays plenty of advanced workout data including
RPM avg, RPM peak, lap, % time in heart rate zone and much more.
  • Preset Programs: There are 4 workout programs to choose from including heart rate zone, power zone, lap, Functional Threshold Power (FTP) test.

The Not-So-Great

  • Program Quantity: Although the preset programs included are good, there are only 4 of them.
  • Warranty: The warranty is OK, but not great. Other Sole cycles have a lifetime frame warranty, but this one only has a 10-year frame warranty.
  • Price: There’s no denying that this is a pricey indoor cycle.

WHO SHOULD RIDE THE SOLE JOHNNY G BIKE?

The Sole Johnny G bike will be a good fit for more seasoned Spinners. Advanced cyclists will love the heavy drive which is reminiscent of a road bike, as well as the advanced data feedback and connectivity for you to accurately track your progress. We think this bike may appeal mostly to more advanced trainees also, because of the price. This may be a barrier to entry for beginner cyclists who aren’t willing to commit to a high-end cycle such as this just yet. It’s a top-quality product, but this comes at a price. As more advanced trainees may see, however, you get what you pay for.

The Bottom Line

The Sole Johnny G bike is a very well-made, versatile spin bike that’s great for any fitness level. It will challenge even the most advanced trainees due to its heavy drive. Adjustable seating and handlebars as well as a 350-pound weight capacity mean it will suit most trainees. It’s a top-quality cycle from the components to the electronics, but as mentioned, this comes at a price. We suspect that because of the higher price and the lack of workout guidance via interactive training (which you find on many models that support interactive training), that this bike will be best for already advanced cyclists or seasoned Spinners.
